Duskpen: AI Evening Journal

Effective date: 23 July 2026 · Last updated: 23 July 2026 · Version 1.1

This Privacy Policy explains how Duskpen (“the App”, “we”, “us”) handles your information. Duskpen is a mobile evening-journaling app for iOS and Android that lets you write a short nightly entry — by typing or by voice — track your mood, and build a streak habit. We designed the App to be private by default: your journal lives on your device, and we collect as little as possible. Please read this policy to understand what data is involved and the choices you have.

1. Who We Are

Duskpen is operated by HyperCode Solutions Kft., a company established in Hungary (European Union), reachable at hello@hypercodesolutions.io. As an EU-based operator, we act as the data controller for the limited personal data described below and process it in accordance with the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). If you have any questions about this policy or your data, contact us at that address.

2. The Data We Process

We keep data collection to the minimum needed to run the App. The table below summarises what is involved and where it lives.

CategoryWhat it isWhere it is stored
Journal contentThe text of your nightly entries, mood selections, timestamps and streak history. On your device, in a local SQLite database. This is the source of truth and is protected by your device's own security (e.g. device encryption and passcode).
Anonymous account identifierA random, non-identifying user ID created for you automatically. No name, email, or phone number is requested.Firebase Authentication (anonymous sign-in). The same ID links your subscription in Adapty and your Premium AI data in our backend.
Voice dictationSpeech you dictate into an entry, converted to text on your device.Processed on-device by the operating system. Audio is not recorded or uploaded by us.
AI reflection data (Premium only)The entry text you choose to send for an AI reflection, the keyword “tags” derived from it, and the AI results (summary, follow-up question, weekly insights).Sent via our backend (Firebase Cloud Functions) to OpenAI for processing, and stored in our backend database (Firebase Firestore) so weekly insights can be generated. Only when you use a Premium AI feature.
Subscription & purchase data (Premium only)Your Premium purchase and subscription status, and a non-identifying purchase/installation identifier used to manage your entitlement.Processed by Adapty and by the app store (Apple App Store / Google Play) that handles the transaction.
Reminder settingsYour notification time and on/off preference, plus an “onboarding seen” flag.On your device (local preferences).

We do not collect: your real name, email address, phone number, contacts, precise location, advertising identifiers, or browsing history. The App contains no advertising and no third-party analytics or tracking SDKs that profile you or track you across other apps and websites.

3. How We Use Your Data

  • To provide the journal: saving, displaying, and letting you edit your entries, moods, and streaks.
  • To sign you in: an anonymous identifier lets the App keep your data associated with you without asking for personal details.
  • To send reminders: local notifications at the time you choose, generated on your device.
  • To manage Premium: to check whether your subscription is active and unlock the Premium features you paid for.
  • To power optional AI features (Premium): when you actively request a reflection, follow-up question, or weekly insight, the relevant entry text or tags are sent for processing and the result is shown to you.

We do not use your journal content to train AI models, to advertise to you, or for any purpose other than delivering the features you use.

4. Voice Input (Free Feature)

Tapping the microphone dictates your entry using your device's built-in, on-device speech-to-text (Apple Speech on iOS, Android SpeechRecognizer on Android). This conversion happens locally. We do not record audio, and no voice audio is transmitted to us or to any AI provider. Only the resulting text becomes part of your entry, exactly as if you had typed it. Using the microphone requires your permission, which you can grant or revoke in your device settings.

5. AI Features and the OpenAI Service (Premium)

AI reflection, adaptive follow-up questions, and weekly pattern insights are optional Premium features. They are the only features that send journal content off your device, and only when you actively invoke them.

  • Requests are routed through a secure server-side function (Firebase Cloud Functions) that adds the necessary credentials; the AI provider's API key is never stored in the App.
  • To limit what is shared, the App is designed to send only the relevant entry text or a small set of extracted tags — not your entire journal history.
  • To generate weekly insights across the last seven days, the entries you submit for AI reflection, together with the derived tags, are stored in our backend database (Firebase Firestore), keyed to your anonymous identifier.
  • AI processing is performed by OpenAI. OpenAI processes the request to generate a response and, under its API terms, does not use API inputs to train its models. See OpenAI's privacy policy at openai.com/policies/privacy-policy.
  • If you never use a Premium AI feature, no journal content ever leaves your device through this path.

6. Payments and Subscriptions (Premium)

Premium is offered as a paid subscription. Purchases are made through the Apple App Store or Google Play, and we use Adapty to manage entitlements and present the subscription screen. We never see or store your full payment-card details — those are handled by the app store. Adapty and the store process your purchase and subscription status and a non-identifying purchase/installation identifier so we can confirm your Premium access and restore it across your devices. Your Premium entitlement is linked to your anonymous account identifier.

7. Storage, Sync, and Security

Your entries are stored in a local database on your device and are the primary copy of your data. The App does not sync or back up your general journal to the cloud. The only journal content that leaves your device is what you actively submit to a Premium AI feature, which the backend then stores in Firebase Firestore (see §5). Data in transit is protected with industry-standard TLS encryption, and backend records are keyed to your anonymous identifier and access-controlled server-side. No system is perfectly secure, but we take reasonable technical and organisational measures to protect your information.

Because your journal is stored locally, deleting the App or wiping your device may permanently remove entries. Use the in-app export feature to keep your own backup.

8. Device Permissions

PermissionWhy we request it
MicrophoneTo let you dictate journal entries by voice (on-device only).
Speech recognitionTo convert your dictation into text on your device.
NotificationsTo deliver the nightly journaling reminder at your chosen time.

All permissions are optional and can be managed at any time in your device's system settings. Declining a permission simply disables the related feature; it never causes the App to crash.

9. Third-Party Services

We rely on a small number of service providers, strictly to operate the App:

  • Firebase (Google) — anonymous sign-in (Authentication), the server-side functions that call the AI provider (Cloud Functions), and storage of Premium AI data (Firestore).
  • OpenAI — AI processing for Premium features only, when invoked.
  • Adapty — subscription and entitlement management for Premium.
  • Apple App Store / Google Play — processing of Premium purchases and subscriptions.

Each provider processes data only as needed to deliver its part of the service. We do not sell or rent your personal data to anyone, and we do not share it for advertising.

10. Data Retention and Your Choices

  • On-device data stays until you delete the entry, clear the App's data, or uninstall the App.
  • Export: you can export your journal from within the App at any time.
  • Deletion: deleting entries in the App removes them from your device; you may request deletion of any Premium AI data held in our backend by contacting us.
  • Depending on where you live, you may have rights to access, correct, export, or delete your personal data. Contact us to exercise these rights.

11. Children's Privacy

Duskpen is not directed to children under 13 (or the minimum age required in your country), and we do not knowingly collect personal data from them. If you believe a child has provided us data, contact us and we will delete it.

12. International Users

Our service providers may process data on servers located in other countries, including outside the European Economic Area (for example, OpenAI and Adapty in the United States). Where data is transferred internationally, we rely on the safeguards offered by those providers, such as standard contractual clauses. By using the App you understand that your data may be processed in locations outside your country of residence.

13. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we make material changes, we will update the “Last updated” date above and, where appropriate, notify you in the App. Continued use of the App after an update means you accept the revised policy.

14. Contact Us
